situated in the medieval village of Bourg-Charente (16) and is in the heart of the Grand Champagne
region on the 'Rue du Vin' of the Charente River. Cognac is 10kms west, Jarnac is 5kms east and there
are four international airports within 75-120 minutes away at La Rochelle, Limoges, Bordeaux and
Poitiers.
Within the grounds of the property are walled gardens, the largest of which is a walled courtyard of a
third of an acre. This has been extensively landscaped and includes flowerbeds, fruit trees, walkways,
patios for outside dining and relaxation, a fire pit and lawned areas. Fruit trees include apple, pear,
cherry, plum and apricot; and three herb areas are ideally stocked with plants for use in cooking
including rosemary, thyme, bay, sage, oregano, marjoram, chives, lemon verbena and tarragon. The
property also has walnut, hazelnut, yew, albizia and plane trees.
The village of Bourg-Charente, with a population of around 770 people, has a school, post office, hair
salon, corner shop (where you can buy fresh bread and croissants each morning), an épicerie, Michelin
Star Restaurant, campsite and a free public tennis court. On the other side of the river, directly opposite
the village square, is Chateau de Bourg, owned by the family who make Grand Marnier.
Boating is very popular and the towpaths allow you to cycle or walk to Cognac or Jarnac with relative
ease. There is a championship 18 hole golf course only 2kms away with excellent practice facilities and
restaurant. Competitions are held regularly and a good percentage of the membership is English
speaking.
